Battlefield to Castle Inn
On a 10 mile circular route we climb Edge Hill, an escarpment that towers above the surrounding countryside. It gave its name to the first battle of the English Civil War, fought in Warwickshire on Sunday, 23 October 1642. All attempts at constitutional compromise between King Charles and Parliament broke down early in 1642. Both the King and Parliament raised large armies to gain their way by force.
We take in some of the area's history by walking the ridge and visiting the Hook Norton Brewery's Castle Inn, an old turreted building now used as a public house, that looks out from its magnificent viewpoint.
- Waterproofs, walking boots and a packed lunch are essential.
- Dogs, welcome, but please remember your leads.
We only regret the opportunities we don't take...
